Tips For Cleaning Your Drum Kit This Spring

Private Drum Lessons Teach Drum Cleaning Maintenance

Not all drum players are the same. Some like to keep their drum set clean and shiny at all times, while others prefer to leave it well alone. However, an occasional cleaning that includes at least wiping-over the instruments with a clean cloth is a good thing to do. Also, maybe once in a year, a percussion kit requires more thorough maintenance as is taught in private drum lessons, which is a good pretext to also give it a proper clean.

If this spring motivates you to do this, you will have to start by gathering the necessary cleaning supplies: a few pieces of soft cloth and some special non-abrasive cleaning solutions.

The first step is to remove the heads and the lugs, because this is the only way to get your chromed parts and shells look like new again. Get rid of dust and dirt from your instruments, using a damp cloth and a safe cleaner bought from the store.

Avoid making homemade cleaners, as you may end up using the wrong substances (such as ammonia!) and damage the aspect your instruments irreversibly. Harsh and abrasive substances fade the colors and scratch the polished aspect, so your drums will look dull and old all of a sudden, if you are not careful.

Do not use anything liquid on the inside of your drums, as their unpolished finish will absorb it and affect the quality of the drum. Getting rid of dust using a dry cloth is everything you must do to clean the inside of your instruments.
