What Is The Best Way To Store Percussion Instruments?

drum percussion drum storage

Percussion instruments are more fragile than you may think, even if they are designed to be beaten. They must be maintained and stored safely as any good drum teacher will instruct you, to ensure as many years of quality performance as possible.

Before storing your drum kit, you will have to clean each component, release tension in drum membranes by about half, loose the vertical tension in snare drums and also remove the bars from all the instruments, as you will have to store them separately, in a bag up off the floor. Cover each drum once you have cleaned it, and put it into a protective case. There are soft cases and hard cases. The first are good if you only want to store the instruments; hard cases are a better option if your drum set also needs to be transported, because they provide protection against impacts.

Besides wrapping and packing your drums, storing them safely also implies finding a good location, where there is no excessive temperature or humidity fluctuations, because these may cause damage to your instruments.

Choose a storage space that can be climate controlled and kept consistently dry and cool. Low traffic in the area is another must, to prevent your instruments from being bumped or even knocked over.
