The minimum age of children who want to attend drum classes should be around 7-8 years. Occasionally, younger children can are, but they are either very talented (special musical sense) or have a particular "maturity”, which makes them more patient and willing to practice.
Kids are typically enthusiastic about playing drums, but their hype will fade away quickly when they realize it is not all about hitting the drums and making as much noise as possible. Therefore, drum lessons must be considered when the child understands the concept of learning and progressing is willing to make the necessary intellectual effort and has the necessary height.
A 4-5 year old child does not have the necessary maturity to approach such an instrument and to have patience during a session (60 minutes). Drums require coordination (between at least 3 members, at the beginning), discipline and a lot of patience. They also involve understanding certain techniques (position of the hands, feet) that must be practiced patiently.
If kids are too young, they will also have troubles reaching the drums, because they do not have the necessary height.
Besides, drums are the only instruments that move both cerebral hemispheres. Drumming requires a lot of mental effort to coordinate all limbs, an effort that can be overwhelming for younger children and the results are likely to be undesirable (loss of interest, boredom, frustration, mental fatigue).
