Signs Your Percussion Instrument Might Need Repairs

Impact Protection Is Recommended For Beginner Drum Lessons

Percussion instruments are sturdy, durable objects, but even so, extensive usage and unfavorable temperature and humidity conditions can lead to smaller or more severe damage. Here are some signs that indicate your percussion instrument might need some professional attention:

  • Sound out of tune – like most other instruments, percussion instruments also need tuning. If you don’t see any obvious signs of damage, but the sound of your instrument has changed, even though you have not changed your play, it might be time to take the instrument to an expert for some tuning;
  • Head replacement – drumheads work well only if they are perfectly tight. A lot of practicing and playing weakens the head, so if the head feels softer and the sticks no longer bounce back as they used to, it is probably time to take the drum to a repair shop;
  • Reapplying the finish – the finish on the case plays more than an aesthetic role, so whenever you notice that the laminate or the lacquer has developed cracks, it is a good idea to get your instrument services before the damage becomes more serious;
  • Any bending of the metal components needs to be addressed in a timely manner as well.  For your children who are taking beginner drum lessons it is important for them to recognize that these minor repairs are still needed to have the drums perform like they are supposed to.
