Tips for Traveling with Your Drum Set

How To Safely Transport Drum Sets When Traveling

Drum sets, with the exception of bongo drums and the like, are bulky, quite heavy, very sensitive to impact and when packed, your drum set will probably consist of multiple bags, making the packaged set very difficult to move around if you are alone. However, it is not impossible to ensure the safety of your set while you are travelling – here are some tips for you:

  • Be careful when you pack your drums – the bodies and the heads of your instruments can easily get cracked, dented or scratched if they are not handled properly. Each of your items will need its own case and it is a good idea to use some soft lining, such as bubble wrap, a soft cloth or both, inside the cases for more protection;
  • Supervise the screening process – if you travel by air and you take your precious drums with you, make sure to assist while your drums are being checked by security officers, not all officers know how to handle such bulky, but sensitive objects;
  • Get insurance for your drums – if your drum set is worth more than a couple of hundred, it is a good idea to make out a special insurance policy for your instruments. You can be sure that the insurance fees will be much lower than the price of a new drum if one of your pieces gets damaged during the trip.
