Both snare drums (also called side drums) and bass drums are integral parts of drum sets and both are very common. However, there are several, very important differences between the two – here are some:
- The sound produced – snare drums produce a high-pitched, staccato sound, while the sound made by bass drums is the lowest-pitched in the drum set;
- Size – bass drums range in size between 16” and 26” in diameter and 16-20” in depth, while snare drums are much smaller, the smallest of them measuring only 10” in diameter and not even the largest ones exceeding 15” and their depth is usually in the 3-8” range;
- Playing method – bass drums are usually operated from a foot pedal board, while snare drums are played with sticks;
- A structural difference – the snare drum contains snares at the bottom, that’s where they get their easy-to-recognize sound, while bas drums are hollow;
- Location in the drum set – bass drums being operated with the foot, they are located in a way that makes pedalling and even kicking comfortable, while the snare is located between the legs of the player, where it can be easily reached and hit without requiring the player to turn their upper body. Everything you need to know about drums can be learned at drum classes for kids and adults if the instructor is good.
