What Are the Different Types of Drums?

What Types

Drums come in many shapes and sizes – all cultures, including ours, have their own, unique percussion instruments and they all have drums the shape and sound of which are similar. The drum sets available in music stores feature many different configurations, but there are some basic components that all of them include, especially if the kit is used for playing popular music – here they are:

  • A snare drum – the great sounding snare drum comes mounted on a stand, it is located between the player’s knees and is played with sticks;
  • A bass drum – this one rests on the floor and it is played with a foot pedal that is operated with a beater the head of which is covered in felt for producing the characteristic, deep sound;
  • Tom drums – you can have a drum kit with one tom or several (usually up to three). Toms can be sounded with a stick or with a brush, depending the style of the music played;
  • A hi-hat – this drum is made up by two cymbals mounted on a stand and is played with a stick or with a pedal located at the left foot of the player;
  • More cymbals – they are also mounted on stands and played with sticks.
