How Many Years Does It Take to Learn to Be a Skilled Drummer

drum lessons skilled player

When it comes to playing drums, many people make the mistake to believe that the learning process is easy. That’s until they actually hit a drum and realize that simply hitting it is not gracious at all. Drum lessons are not enough either. They can be very helpful, of course, but playing drums also requires a few essential qualities: rhythmic sense, determination, practice and patience.

Learning to play the drums is different from learning to swim, say, or learning to drive. In the case of driving, after about 30 hours, you can take your license and are allowed to drive the car; when it comes to swimming, in a few sessions, you can learn to swim, without being required to practice individually.

But after 30 drum lessons, if you go on stage, your performance may be memorable – but for the wrong reasons...

Rhythmic sense is a person's ability to perceive and accurately reproduce musical sounds. If you do not have it, it will be hard to learn playing drums, because it will take a lot of time and effort to educate it – and you may not even succeed!

Individual study is the most important component when learning to play drums. The musical ear helps you, but if you do not practice, you will not develop the necessary skills. Your teacher can show you how to play, explain, make you understand, but cannot practice in your place.

So, if you want to become a professional drummer, be prepared to make continuous efforts to improve your skills, for at least 5 years with drum lessons Denver area music instructors.
