Percussion instruments appeared earlier than other musical instruments. They were used in antiquity by the peoples of the Middle East and the African continent during wars and religious/ spiritual ceremonies. Percussion instruments, whose names are numerous, as well as their types, continue to be very popular and music is almost inconceivable without them.
A percussion instrument is an object that produces a certain sound following a hit, shake or rub. The term refers, in particular, to objects used for rhythmic purposes. The word 'Percussion' comes from the Latin terms 'percussio' (which translates to "hit" - with a musical meaning) and "percussus" (rhythmic beat).
There are two main categories of percussion instruments: tunable and autophone.
Tunable percussion instruments
In this category, we can find the tympan, xylophone, vibraphone and marimbaphone (also called marimba or balafon).
Autophone percussion instruments
Drums are the best known percussion instruments in this category. There is a wide variety of drums, currently having a great popularity in Western culture including African manual percussion (bongo, conga) or Asian drums. It is believed that drums are one of the first types of musical instruments built by humans (evolved from idiophones).
Other autophone percussion instruments are the triangle and the tambourine.
A special category is represented by complex percussion instruments, and here we refer to drum kits.
A drum kit includes a number of drums, cymbals and various other instruments, according to the taste and preferences of the musician. No matter the type of percussion instruments that is being played percussion lessons can be very helpful for the young that show an interest in making music.
