A percussion instrument (from the Latin “percussion” = blow or “percussus” = rhythmic beat) is an object that produces a sound when you hit it. Percussion instruments can be membranophones (with a membrane, for example a drum) or idiophones (without a membrane, for example a bell).
Some of these instruments have a diffuse tone (e.g. the drum), others have a more defined sound (e.g. the tympanum). Instruments with a well-defined tone are tuned by tensioning the membrane (membranophones) or by using different shapes and sizes of the same instrument (idiophones). Diffuse tone instruments are mainly used for rhythmic purposes.
Percussion instruments can be activated by hand or with sticks. In addition, as with other instruments, there are a number of necessary accessories.
Cases allow the safe keeping and transportation of percussion instruments, the stands provide adequate support, while microphones headphones are essential accessories for any drummer - beginner or advanced.
