What Size Drumsticks Are Best For Me

drumsticks sizes choices percussion instruments

To be a good drummer, you need good drumsticks. When it comes to the size of drumsticks, you may get confused because of the letters and numbers they are labeled with.   Places like Denver Percussion can help you decide what size drumsticks you are best suits you.

Here are some guidelines to help you choose the right drumstick size for you.

Basically, those letters associated with drumsticks design their application. As such, A is for orchestra models, B is for band models, S is for street models, while D is for dance models.  On the other hand, the numbers associated with drumsticks refer to their weight and thickness.

Aspects to take into account when you purchase your drum sticks:

  • The thicker the sticks, the lower the number.
  • The higher numbers are suitable for more delicate play; lower numbers are better for heavier beats.
  • The most common drumstick numbers are 7 (15.00" to 15.75" long), 5 (16.00" long) and 2 (16.00" to 16.50" long).

When both letters and numbers are combined, the most common drum stick sizes are 5A, 5B and 2B.

Other sizes are :

  • 3A – Thicker and a bit longer than 5A;
  • 7A – Thin drum sticks used for softer applications or jazz;
  • 8D – Also thin, but longer than 7A;
  • 1A – The longest drum sticks.
