What to Look for When Buying Used Drums

Buying used drums is an excellent decision for beginner players who still have to find out whether drumming is their calling. Second-hand drum sets lose no or very little of their value, so in most cases they make safe purchases, but even so, there are some things that you should know about and to look for:

  • The configuration – before you start shopping for your drum set, make sure to know exactly what you want. There are many standard set configurations available, so figure out the best one for your skill level and your goals;
  • The condition of the instruments in the set – percussion instruments are very hardy, but you should check and try the set that appeals to you before buying it, and know you can always take it in for drum repair if needed.  Check for shell roundness (the best way to check that is to take a close look at the collar – if the shell is out of round, the collar will not fit snugly), for scratching on the chrome components and for damage on the heads. Not everything that seems to be damage is deterioration, indeed – sometimes excessive dirt might make a drum look worn and damaged, so when you inspect the drum set, bring a piece of soft cloth and rub gently to see if the imperfection comes off.
