How Does the Size of the Drum Impact Sound

Drum Sets Different Size Drums

There are different types of drums in a percussion set, and their size is one of the factors that impact sound.  Affordable drum sets Denver music stores sell will include all of these:

The most common snare drums are 14″x 5″-sized. They have a punchy sound and require just medium tension to play most songs. A loose tuning is more suitable for ballads. There are also models with lower frequencies and more bottom end, perfect for pop and rock; their size is 14″x 6″.

Snare drums that can produce very deep sounds are typically sized 14″ x 7″ and 8. On the other hand, 14″ x 3.5″and 14″ x 4″-sized snares produce rather high-pitched sounds, while 13″ diameter snare drums are tight-sounding.

The smallest snares are 10″-sized and they are really great as auxiliary snares, to produce special effects.

Toms represent another very popular category of drums. The smallest sensible size is considered 8″. It is not very easy to play, but it has a tasty sound that requires some restraint from the drummer, otherwise it may have a numbing effect.

A 10″x 8″ tom is probably the most common diameter and can produce high-pitched sounds but may also be tuned surprisingly low too. 12″ is the most versatile and popular diameter, while 14″-16″-18″ sizes are typical for floor toms producing deep sounds.

Bass drums also come in several sizes, from the 20″ diameter, which is considered all-purpose, to 28″, which is particularly versatile in the hands of talented player.
