How to Make the Most of Percussion Exercises for the Beginning Drummer

Drum Bongo Drum Lessons Percussion Exercises

Learning how to master a musical instrument is all about perseverance and practice, practice, practice. Here are some tips about how to make the most of essential drum exercises including bongo drums for beginners:

  • Practice every day – include at least 30 minutes of drumming into your schedule every day. If you have the time, you can play for hours – the more you practice, the better;
  • Use a metronome – a good sense of rhythm is essential for playing the drums, but even the most talented beginner can do with a little help, so get a metronome to set the pace for your play. In the beginning, set it to 70 beats a minute and step up the speed as you feel fit;
  • Stay fit – drumming is a physically demanding activity, so if you think you need to get into shape to become a better player, try to work out a little every day;
  • Learn how to read sheet music for drums – drum sheets are different from the sheet music used with other instruments (fortunately, it is much simpler), so take the time to learn to read it;
  • Get some targeted routines – you will find lots of great drills for beginners online.
