Playing Percussion Instruments Is Good For Your Mental Health

It was scientifically proven that playing drums is beneficial in the harmonious development of the creativity as well as for the capacity of thinking and memorizing.

Recently, a group of researchers were curious about brain changes associated with drumming, so they have conducted a study. The authors, coming from Bergmannsheil University and Ruhr-Universität, both in Bochum, Germany, have published their work in the journal “Brain and Behavior”.

To investigate, the two scientists recruited 20 people who play drums at a professional level, who averaged 17 years of experience and who practiced 10.5 hours on average, each week. Additionally, they recruited 24 subjects who did not play any musical instrument.

Scientists have used MRI scanning technology to measure various aspects of their brain structure and function, and their results indicate that playing drums professionally is associated with more efficient neural design of cortical motor areas. The two authors of the study hope that their results could be clinically useful. They revealed that long-term learning of complex motor tasks has the potential to lead to substantial restructuring of cortical motor networks, and understanding these processes can have implications for people with motor disorders.
