Playing The Drums As A Hobby

Playing Percussion Instruments As A Hobby For Fun

Whether you are going to play drums as a hobby or  planning to go pro, you will have to go through a skill-training phase during which you have to learn and explore the drum's position and how to hold the sticks, the values (duration) of musical sounds, rhythm, tempo etc. In other words, you must begin to develop your technique, dynamics, hands and feet independence and coordination, as well as to practice metronome study at different tempos.

The base of playing the drums, in terms of execution speed and the technique development are the so-called “rudiments”. A rudiment is a formula, a series of sounds, a pattern that helps you develop the ability to control sticks and improve your execution speed, all of which can be learned by taking classes at Denver Percussion music shop.

The most important rudiments are those approved by Percussive Arts Society, a nonprofit organization in the United States, considered internationally as a central source of percussion information. There are 40 rudiments and each of them has a specific role in the development of the player`s abilities.

At first, focus on 3 of these rudiments, namely:

  • Single stroke roll
  • Double stroke roll
  • Single Paradiddle

These are the basic rudiments. Once you get to run them at a fast pace, both rhythmically and dynamically, you can move to the rest of the rudiments, and then apply them both in rhythms and fills.
