Terminology to Know for Percussion Instruments

Music Language For DrummersWhatever instrument you are planning to learn, the process will involve not only the development of specific skills and dexterity, but also learning the jargon specific of the instrument and of music in general. Here are some of categories of terminology that you will have to learn while you are learning percussion instruments:

  • The names of the instruments – the names of the pieces that make up drum sets, the names of the separate percussion instruments that are usually not included in sets and the names of the accessories related to the instruments are very important to learn;

  • The terms related to rhythm and movement – the terms used for the movements intended to sound the instruments, the terminology used for indicating intensity or frequency are also essential;

  • Technical terms – the terms for parts of the instruments and maintenance procedures that you, as the user of the instrument, are supposed to carry out regularly also need to become part of your percussion vocabulary;

  • Some terms used on sheet music – the music notes used for the section played by percussion instruments is simpler than the notes used on sheets for melodic instruments, but even so, sheet music terminology will also have to be learned.
