Most Popular Percussion Instruments

Music Lessons

Which was the oldest musical instrument built by man? It's a hard-to-answer question, because we should first decide what means a musical instrument. Hitting two pieces of wood to produce rhythmic sounds means to play an instrument? We can say so… After all, specialists agree that the earliest musical instruments have been in the percussion category – which produces the sound by hitting different surfaces with different objects.

The word 'Percussion' derives from the Latin terms 'percussio' (which is translated by 'hit', but with a musical meaning) and 'percussus' (rhythmic beating).

Among the most popular percussion instruments are drum kits and tambourine.

The drum kit is a complex musical instrument consisting of several different percussion instruments played by the drummer. The instruments surround the drummer, who plays while sitting down in a structure that allows simultaneous action of up to four percussions, using hands and feet and most instructors offer beginner drum lessons for kids and adults alike .

A tambourine looks like small, portable drum formed by a membrane wrapped tightly on a metal plate, with attached metal jingles (zills)all around. The sound is obtained by striking the membrane gently, with your bare hand and agitating the tambourine through the air. It is used in many traditional, classic and modern music styles.
